BLADE STAFF WRITER Seven-year-old Isabella Litzer has a winning singing voice.
The Maplewood Elementary School first grader beat out more than 300 children from Ohio and Michigan in the “Sing-a-Jing” contest sponsored by Hansons’ Windows.
A home video of Isabella performing Hansons’ jingle was the top vote-getter in an online competition for a prize valued at $8,000. She will receive a $5,000 savings bond as well as a $500 gift card to Toys “R” Us.
Sylvania‘s Maplewood Elementary also will benefit from her success. The school will receive a $2,500 donation from the windows, roofing, gutters and siding company based in Madison Heights, Mich.
For her entry, Isabella and her mother, Lori, produced a 15-second video. Isabella sang the Hanson’s jingle: “Come on everybody, get it done, you know the one. Call 1-800-Hansons.” Mrs. Litzer stood by with the video camera in the family’s living room.
The mother-daughter team then began a campaign to win the vote race. They started appealing to their friends and family for support.
Mrs. Litzer e-mailed friends and co-workers.
Isabella passed out “cam-paign” flyers at Sylvania’s Fall Festival.
When the phone call came, saying she had won, Isabella was thrilled.
“I put my hand over my mouth and I was so excited,” she said. “I felt like … I don’t know, really happy and surprised.”
She said she wants to buy a dollhouse-sized High School Musical set with her gift certificate.
Principal Ed Eding said the prize money will likely be used to make some permanent addition to the new Maplewood school when it’s completed in the next few years.
Hansons officials are planning to host an awards ceremony at the school later this month.

ROYAL OAK – Both nervous and excited, Christopher Mumby stood in front of the entire Oakland Elementary School and belted out a familiar tune. And the whole school followed along, singing with him. The 5-year-old Ferndale resident came in third place in a contest sponsored by Hansons, a home improvement company based in Madison Heights, to sing the company’s “Get it done” jingle.
Mumby, a kindergartener, won a $1,000 savings bond for college and a $250 Toys “R” Us gift card. The school also received $1,000.
He smiled and shrugged his shoulders on Jan. 9 when asked what he was going to buy at the toy store.
“I don’t even know what’s at the toy store,” he said.
The contest asked kids to film themselves singing the “1-800-Hansons” tune and upload it onto the company’s Web site. People were then asked to vote for their favorite.
Brian Elias, president of the company, said more than 50,000 people voted in the contest.
“It really was a community coming together and that’s what I really liked about this contest,” Elias said.
He said they wanted to get the kids involved and make the donation to the schools as well because education has been an extremely important part of his family’s life.
“I wanted to combine family with education, along with the third element, which is fun,” he said. “And that is Toys ‘R ‘ Us.”
Mumby‘s mother, Julie, said they kept the fact he was getting money for the toy store a secret until the assembly on Jan. 9.
“It’s just very exciting,” she said. “A thousand dollars for college is very big.”
She said he recorded the video at his grandfather’s house with a microphone in front of him and a recording studio “look” behind him.
George Guzzio, principal of Oakland Elementary, said the money donated to the school would go toward field trips and cultural assemblies.
“We have some funds for that, but this will help,” he said. “This way it will benefit all of our students.”
He said they expect to spend the funds within this school year. Guzzio praised Mumby as a student.
“He’s very kind and conscientious,” he said. “For a kindergartener, he’s just really quite outstanding.”
